The kids are grown and gone, but the animals
remain. For 37 years we've had the dachshund loyalty. I bought our
first dachshund, Schatzie...a small, red, smoothcoat before we
married in 1972, and our four children were raised with her for the
next 14 years. We added the second dachshund in 1980, Penney...a
red, long-hair that loved to hunt rabbit with my husband...and she
was great at it. Since then we have always had 2, 3, 4 or more
dachshunds at a time. Once you have the love of a dachshund in your
heart...you know there can be no other type of dog for you.
Dachshunds are known for their devotion and loyalty to their owners.
If left alone many dachshunds will whine until they have
companionship, one of the reasons why we always had more than one.
Dachshunds are playful, fun dogs, known for their propensity to
chase small animals, birds and tennis balls with great determination
and ferocity. Many dachshunds are strong-headed or stubborn, making
them a challenge to train. Dachshunds have been known to have a
liking to dig holes in the garden, kill moles, or chase small
animals such as birds, squirrels, and the occasional farm cat.. They
have a particularly loud bark, making them great watchdogs. All of
our dachshunds are raised in the house, and at least 4 of them sleep
with us every night. They have their own entrance into a huge
fenced-in backyard and pasture for hunting, digging, rolling. and
doing all things a dachshund loves to do. Fortunately I have a job
that allows me to work at home so I can spend a great deal of time
with them. No...they are not spoiled in the least. (heh)
We never got into breeding until 1997, along with
miniature horses, and pygmy goats. The work is hard, but the rewards
are so grand. Breeding is not for everyone. It takes time, hard
work, lots of patience, and money. We are always learning, and eager
to learn more. There are so many great sites on the internet to help
with the betterment of the breed. We spend all our extra time
researching and reading anything and everything about the
dachshunds. Many other breeders and researchers out there have shown
us the way we knew was not always right, and we are grateful to
those that share their knowledge with us. We've never had the
pleasure to show or do field events, as my handicap places too great
a burden on my husband to take care of all things. We are contented
to just share our lives with our dachshunds, and all our other
animals, and with those of others through their babies and visits to
our small farm. We strive for the betterment of the breed, happy
little dogs with great temperments and good health.
We invite many people, young and old, to come
visit our small farm each year, we love to share our animals and
babies with them. We always encourage our extended dachshund family
members to keep in touch, send current photos, and visit when time
allows. We are always there for them should they ever need any help
or have any questions.
